  • Our Story | Behavioral and Research Center

Our Story With you at every step From the very beginning of her academic career, Dr. Patricia Muñoz always dreamed of uniting science and care—and that was precisely what motivated her to found the Patricia Muñoz Behavioral and Research Center. Throughout her career, she specialized in autism, ADHD, and applied behavior analysis, earned important certifications, and developed a sensitive focus on the needs of children and their families. At every stage—whether in research, teaching, or clinical care—her direction has always been clear: to offer interventions based on scientific evidence with care, respect, and empathy. This combination of technical precision and human warmth has become the foundation of our history. Today, this legacy lives on in the clinic, the research center, and the website you are visiting. Our journey continues guided by the same values: technical excellence, innovation, and, above all, a genuine commitment to the well-being of families and the development of children. My Story I have a degree in Psychology with a specialization in Neuropsychology from the Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo School of Medicine. I completed my Master's and Doctorate degrees at the Institute of Psychology at the University of São Paulo. During my Master's, I researched animal-assisted therapy and interactions with children with autism, and during my Doctorate, I studied how children with autism recognize emotions. I hold a Psychologist's license in Brazil (CRP 06-54773) and a Behavior Analyst license in the United States (QBA #17127 and LBA 8404). During my Doctorate, I also studied at Harvard Medical School, where I completed, among other courses, a course on Child Psychotherapy and another on risk and self-injurious behaviors. I worked for 16 years as a school administrator and clinical director of a special education school, which gave me the opportunity to learn about and study various clinical cases, such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and autism spectrum disorder. After these years leading the special education school and the multidisciplinary clinic, I moved to Houston, Texas, and worked for two years as a Coordinator for an organization that serves refugee children and adolescents. It was an excellent experience, and I was able to work with clinical cases involving trauma and cultural adaptation. With all this clinical experience and my academic knowledge, I believe I can accompany you every step of the way, whether in clinical care, online guidance, or your training through my courses.

  • ABA Focused | Behavioral and Research Center

ABA Focused Service within the A.B.A. Multicultural Diverse Kids Center The ABA Focused Social Communication Program is a structured, evidence-based intervention designed for children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), particularly those identified as Level 1 support needs, who experience challenges in social communication, emotional regulation, flexibility, and adaptive participation in everyday environments. Many children who benefit from this program may speak fluently and perform well academically, yet struggle with the functional use of social skills. They may find it difficult to initiate conversations, sustain peer relationships, manage frustration, adapt to change, or interpret social and nonverbal cues. These challenges can significantly impact their confidence, classroom participation, friendships, and emotional well-being. This program was developed to address these deeper social-developmental needs in a systematic, individualized, and clinically grounded way—promoting meaningful and generalized progress across home, school, and community settings. Understanding ABA Comprehensive vs. ABA Focused Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services are typically delivered in two primary models: Comprehensive ABA and Focused ABA. The appropriate model depends on the child’s level of support needs and developmental profile. ABA Comprehensive Comprehensive ABA is recommended for children with higher levels of support needs (often ASD Level 2 or Level 3). This model typically includes: Intensive programming (20–40 hours per week) Intervention across multiple developmental domains Communication development Daily living and self-care skills Reduction of significant challenging behaviors Broad independence training Comprehensive ABA is designed for children who require substantial, structured support across many areas of functioning. Understanding ABA Comprehensive vs. ABA Focused ABA Focused ABA Focused is designed for children and adolescents with ASD Level 1 or more specific support needs . This model: Targets specific areas of difficulty Requires fewer weekly hours Emphasizes social communication, emotional regulation, and adaptive participation May support maintenance of skills previously acquired in comprehensive programs The ABA Focused model is appropriate for children who demonstrate foundational skills but require structured support in targeted areas that impact social functioning and independence. Our ABA Focused program may provide up to 15 hours per week of intervention , depending on individualized clinical recommendations and medical necessity . What Does the Program Focus On? Our intervention targets the core areas that most commonly affect children with autism in real-life contexts. We focus on: Social communication and conversational reciprocity , including initiating, maintaining, and appropriately closing conversations Peer interaction skills , helping children build and sustain meaningful friendships Emotional regulation and frustration tolerance , supporting children in managing strong emotions Flexibility and adaptive responding , especially during transitions and unexpected changes Self-management and independence , increasing autonomy in daily routines Responsiveness to social and environmental cues , such as instructions, group expectations, and subtle social signals Nonverbal communication , including interpretation of facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language Participation in classroom and group settings , strengthening cooperation, listening, and task persistence Rather than focusing solely on isolated skill acquisition, we work toward authentic participation, emotional flexibility, and generalization of skills across environments. Our Clinical Framework Socially Savvy Curriculum The program is structured around the Socially Savvy curriculum, which organizes intervention across seven key domains of social competence: Joint attention and shared engagement Cooperative and imaginative play Emotional awareness and coping strategies Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Functional and pragmatic language Classroom and group behaviors Nonverbal social communication This framework ensures that intervention addresses both observable behaviors and the underlying social-cognitive and regulatory processes that support long-term development. Pivotal Response Training (PRT) We also integrate Pivotal Response Training (PRT) , a naturalistic intervention derived from Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). PRT focuses on pivotal developmental areas that lead to widespread improvements. Through this approach, we work to: Increase motivation for social interaction Encourage spontaneous communication Improve responsivity to multiple cues Strengthen emotional flexibility Promote generalization across home, school, and community By targeting these pivotal areas, children often demonstrate improvements not only in social skills, but also in independence, engagement, and adaptive functioning. Clinical Services With you at every step Life Coaching Nature of Life Coaching Life coaching is a professional relationship that helps individuals gain clarity, build self-awareness, and take purposeful steps toward their goals. It is not psychotherapy, counseling, or medical treatment. Coaching sessions focus on the clients' values, motivation, life balance, decision-making, relationships, and personal growth. A coach is not a therapist, counselor, or consultant, and will not provide clinical diagnosis or treatment. Academic Coaching Academic Coaching is a personalized, skills-based support service designed to help children and adolescents develop the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral tools necessary for success in school and beyond . More than just tutoring, Academic Coaching focuses on how students learn, organize themselves, and respond to challenges, fostering long-term self-awareness, independence, and confidence. At the Patricia Munoz Behavioral and Research Center, our Academic Coaching program is grounded in evidence-based practices and taught by highly trained professionals who understand the complex relationship between learning, brain development, and behavior. Academic Coaching helps students develop these essential skills in a structured, supportive, and individualized environment. As students gain clarity about their goals and learn to overcome obstacles, they become more confident, motivated, and able to take responsibility for their learning. Counseling Counseling aims to provide a supportive and safe environment where clients can explore their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Through this process, clients can develop greater self-awareness, improve their coping skills, and work toward achieving personal growth, emotional well-being, and individual goals. Counseling is a collaborative journey in which clients and counselors work together to address challenges, foster resilience, and create meaningful change. Treatment methods such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and Play therapy are applied here at Patricia Munoz Behavioral and Research Center. We’ll use CBT to recognize how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence each other. We’ll then use that knowledge to change your thinking patterns, which will help you lead a less anxious and stressed life. Play therapy allows the child free and spontaneous expression of feelings. Speech Therapy Our speech therapy services are designed with empathy, connection, and neurodiversity in mind. We support autistic and neurodivergent children using a strengths-based, child-led approach that honors each child's unique way of communicating and interacting. We specialize in: Natural language development , including Gestalt Language Processing AAC support and alternative communication systems Play-based and relational therapy that fosters social connection and self-expression Caregiver coaching to support language across daily routines We also provide feeding therapy that focuses on sensory aversions, using a gentle, responsive approach. Feeding sessions are never forced—we support trust, exploration, and positive experiences around food at the child’s pace. Every session is built around fun, flexibility, and empowerment —because therapy should feel good for everyone involved. • Diverse Kids | Behavioral and Research Center

Diverse Kids The Multicultural ABA Center Diverse Kids is a multicultural ABA Center specializing in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services for children and youths with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, and learning challenges. The center offers high quality services culturally competent with bilingual services in Portuguese, Spanish and English About ABA Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientifically proven approach that helps understand how behavior is influenced by the environment. When we talk about "behavior," we refer to everyday actions and skills. "Environment" includes everything that can influence or be influenced by these actions—from people and social interactions to everyday situations. In ABA therapy, we use different teaching methods to help children learn new skills in a practical and efficient way. Furthermore, a well-planned intervention can reduce behaviors that hinder development (such as tantrums, refusal, avoidance, self-harm, or aggression), always in a respectful and individualized manner. Before beginning treatment, we conduct careful assessments to understand the function of each behavior . This ensures that the plan is tailored to the child's specific needs. ABA's goals are always focused on what makes a difference in real life: teaching socially meaningful skills, promoting autonomy, and supporting children to achieve a better quality of life at home, school, and in the community. One-to-one intensive intervention The Diverse Kids offers individualized behavioral therapy based on ABA principles. We adapt our services to meet the needs of each unique person. Our ABA treatment program includes but is not limited to: Behavioral Evaluations Direct 1:1 Therapy Functional Behavioral Assessments Behavior Intervention Plans Parent/Caregiver Training Life Skills/Social Skills Training Coordination of care with other therapeutic services Community-Based Interventions Transitioning and Fading Support Services Bilingual Services Diverse Kids is a center that offers treatment in the client's primary language. We offer treatment in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. Language is at the heart of therapeutic work. It allows therapists to build trust, express empathy, and understand the inner experiences of both their clients and themselves. When a client is not comfortable communicating in English, the quality of treatment can suffer. For children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, language development should be a primary focus, as many individuals on the spectrum experience challenges with communication. A meta-analysis of 76 published and unpublished quantitative studies found that therapy for ethnic minority clients who received services in their native language was, on average, twice as effective as therapy in English. It also found that interventions designed for a specific culture are four times more effective than interventions designed for multiple minority groups (Bailey, D. S. (2007, February). Therapy is twice as effective in clients' native language. Monitor on Psychology, 38(2). ( https://www.apa.org/monitor/feb07/therapy). Behavior Management As parents and professionals, we often encounter challenging behaviors that need to be understood and addressed. To achieve this, we use functional behavioral assessment (FBA) , a tool that helps us understand why a child behaves in a certain way. Functional analysis investigates how behaviors relate to the environment—that is, what situations, people, or events can influence or maintain these behaviors. With this information, we can identify the functions of the behavior (such as seeking attention, avoiding tasks, or obtaining something desired). This process allows us to develop effective strategies , adjusting the antecedents (what happens before the behavior) and the consequences (what happens afterward), to promote positive and lasting changes. Our goal is always to support the child and family, reducing challenges and strengthening skills that truly make a difference in daily life. Resources Utilized in Sessions Mightier Mightier is a biofeedback-based tool that aims to strengthen the emotional regulation of children with self-regulation difficulties, neurodevelopmental disabilities (such as ASD, ADHD), learning disabilities, and challenging behaviors. Through interactive games and continuous heart rate monitoring, children learn to recognize and manage states of emotional arousal. Plugo Plugo, by PlayShifu, is an interactive and educational gaming system that combines physical toys with digital games to make learning fun and engaging for children. It uses augmented reality (AR) to transform screen time into a hands-on learning experience. Designed for children ages 4 to 10, Plugo helps develop essential skills such as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) learning, problem-solving and critical thinking, literacy and storytelling, logical reasoning, and motor skills. Osmo Osmo is an educational system that combines physical play with digital learning, designed especially for children ages 3 to 10 and older. Using a tablet and a special reflective camera accessory, Osmo transforms the space in front of the screen into an interactive play area. Children use real-world objects—such as number tiles, letter tiles, drawing tools, and boards—while the Osmo app "sees" and responds to their movements in real time. It's a hands-on, screen-based learning experience that feels like play but develops skills like reading and spelling, creativity, math, and numeracy, among others. Play Attention Play Attention is a comprehensive neurocognitive training program that combines brain-sensing technology with interactive cognitive games. It utilizes a NASA-inspired wearable device called BrainWave, which measures and responds to the user's attention level in real time. This unique combination of mental training and feedback provides targeted support for the development of key executive function skills. Obie Obie is an interactive projection system from EyeClick that transforms any surface into a dynamic, motion-responsive play zone. With over 200 games available, Obie stimulates movement, promotes cognitive challenges, and encourages social interaction, making it an ideal tool for therapeutic environments. Sensory Room Our Sensory Room is carefully designed to support children's sensory, emotional, and developmental needs through immersive multisensory experiences. This environment promotes calm, focus, body awareness, and self-regulation in a structured and safe space. Play Room The playroom is an environment specially designed to stimulate child development through play. In the playroom, our clients can learn self-regulation strategies through play, such as identifying when they're feeling overwhelmed and learning to ask for help or retreat to a quiet space.
